Healthcare & Wellness
For over 50 years Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC) has been building a reputation based on quality and is a nationally recognized health care organization that provides stat-of-the-art technology and cutting edge services.
TGMC is a public, non-profit integrated healthcare system consisting of a 299 licensed bed acute care facility complete with a range of services such as rehabilitation and skilled nursing units, an outpatient surgery center, emergency care services, primary care services and a community outreach center. Terrebonne General takes pride in being the largest community-based hospital in the tri-parish area of Terrebonne, Lafourche and St. Mary parishes. The medical center serves as a major economic force for the community with a staff of over 1200 employees. In addition, the hospital currently has a medical staff of over 150 registered physicians offering a variety of specialties ranging from family practice to cardiovascular surgery.
The Medical Center is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), the national body that ensures that member hospitals meet established standards for quality of patient care. TGMC is also a member of Premier, a consulting organization of several hundred-quality hospitals throughout the entire United States, Louisiana Hospital Association and the American Hospital Association.
In 2005, the Medical Center was honored as the best of the best and was a recipient of the prestigious Premier Award for Quality. Measurements show that TGMC has one of the lowest average lengths of stays and mortality rates in the nation related to Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts (CABG). Also, The American College of Radiology (ACR) awarded TGMC with the state’s first three-year accreditation in CT-Scan as a result of a recent survey.
In November 2004, Terrebonne General Medical Center was awarded the prestigious designation of “Employer of Choiceâ” by Employer of Choice, Inc. of Greensboro, North Carolina. The award recognizes an organization’s dedication to a higher level of employee continuity, workforce stability and performance, and assures customer loyalty and employee satisfaction. This is an exceptional honor since only 1% of hospitals in the nation operate at the level required for this designation.
Another nationally recognized area hospital is
Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center (CMC). This
medical center originally opened in 1978 under
the name of South Louisiana Medical Center. The
hospital is part of the Louisiana State University
Medical Center-Health Care Sciences Division and
operates as one of the nine charity facilities
in the state. Additionally, the hospital serves
as a teaching facility providing clinical training
for physicians and allied health personnel. CMC
serves the health care needs of the populations
of Terrebonne Parish, Lafourche Parish, Assumption
Parish, the western portion of St. James Parish
and the eastern part of St. Mary Parish regardless
of financial determination. The CMC is accredited
by The Joint Commission(JCAHO) on Accreditation
of Health Care Organizations and has also been
recognized by the JCAHO as one of two finalists
in their Codman award series for disease prevention
management for diabetes patients. The 147-bed
hospital employs over 1,000 personnel and medical
services to the population of Region III.
Houma is proud to be the home of the Cardiovascular
Institute of the South (CIS), one of the United
States' largest and most comprehensive centers
for the nonsurgical and surgical treatment of
heart disease. Founded in 1983, CIS now has a
group of over 30 cardiologists and cardiovascular
surgeons. Together they represent every specialty
in heart and circulatory medicine, with clinics
in over a dozen communities.
Since 1996 Physician’s Surgical Specialty Hospital (PSSH), located at 218 Corporate Drive in Houma, has provided the Tri-Parish area with an alternative to the traditional surgical experience. The 50,000-square-foot building sits on a 7-acre campus immediately adjacent to Tunnel Blvd., the ever-expanding retail corridor of the tri-Parish area.
Specialty hospitals have existed throughout the country for some time and are becoming increasingly popular. Physician-founded hospitals are not a new idea. Physicians founded the Mayo Clinic.
PSSH is a Medi-Care certified, state licensed acute care hospital. The hospital has 5 operating rooms, one cysto suite, one endoscopy suite, a lithotripter, pain management and a comprehensive radiology/imaging center. PSSH offers most services that one might expect from a larger, more institutionalized facility. Over 100 employees, including 50 nurses, are employed by the hospital.
86 local physicians are credentialed to practice at the hospital. Staff with privileges includes specialists in anesthesiology, family medicine, gastroenterology, general surgery, gynecology, internal medicine, neurology, neuro surgery, obstetrics, ophthalmology, oral surgery, orthopedics, otolaryngology (ENT), pain management, plastic surgery, podiatry, pulmonology, radiology and urology.
Obesity is the state’s costliest preventable public health killer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity mortality rates will soon surpass that of smoking. As the only hospital in the Tri-Parish area offering bariatric surgery, PSSH provides comprehensive care and support for life-long weight control. PSSH has quickly become well known for its multi-disciplinary approach to weight management before, during and after surgery.
Scheduled for completion in 2007 is a state of the art 10,000 square foot comprehensive breast care center. In a spa-like environment, the breast care center will offer both, screening and diagnostic digital mammographies as well as a full scope of minimally invasive surgical intervention procedures.
Utilizing the most sophisticated diagnostic technology and state-of-the-science treatment available, the comprehensive breast care center will provide world-class, quality care in an aesthetically pleasing and supportive environment.
Houma also has four nursing homes: Heritage Manor,
Mason de Ville, Evangeline Village, and Southdown
Care Center. The homes have a total bed count
of 557.
Acadian Ambulance and Air Med Services has been
providing quality pre-hospital medical care and
EMS to the citizens of southern Louisiana for
over 25 years. Acadian has 140 ground ambulances,
five Air Med helicopters, and two medically-configured
fixed-wing aircraft. Its top-notch medical and
transportation equipment is supported by a staff
size of 1,382.
In addition to the principle hospitals in the
region, Terrebonne Parish is the home to seven
medical and surgical clinics, a regional mental
health clinic, and a parish health unit. Approximately
97 physicians and surgeons, 45 dentists, 13 ophthalmologists
and optometrists, 11 chiropractors, and five psychiatrists
have practices in our parish.
The high quality and vast range of medical facilities
and personnel work together to ensure that the
citizens of Terrebonne Parish have access to some
of the best medical care in the state of Louisiana.
