& Higher Learning
In Terrebonne Parish, our public school system
consists of 41 school sites: four senior highs,
three junior highs, and 30 elementary and middle
schools, one vocational training school, one school
for exceptional children, and two alternative
secondary schools.
We have 19,600 students enrolled in the Terrebonne
Parish public school system and 1,300 qualified
teachers. Valuable interaction, information, and
feedback are provided through active Parent Teacher
Organizations throughout our public school system.
Terrebonne Parish also has eight private, non-public
primary and secondary schools with a total enrollment
of just over 2,700 students. These quality institutions
provide an excellent alternative to public education.

Terrebonne Parish is centrally located within convenient
driving distance of 17 colleges/universities. Nicholls
State University located in Thibodaux (only 17 miles
from Houma) enrolls approximately 7,500 students
and offers 80 degree programs, with a growing number
of master's degree programs.
Other prestigious schools within commuting distance
are: Tulane, Loyola, and Louisiana State University.
Nicholls State University is located in the city
of
Thibodaux.
The Allied Health and Continuing Education Building,
one of Nicholls State's newest campus additions,
is situated conveniently in Terrebonne Parish behind
the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center. The new building
offers Terrebonne students teleconferencing capabilities
with the main Nicholls State campus in Thibodaux.
Louisiana Technical College's L.E. Fletcher Campus
is the one state-funded regional technical college
in Terrebonne Parish. The L.E. Fletcher Campus is
one of four colleges in the Louisiana Technical
College System, which are scattered across the state.
Students entering Louisiana Technical College can
choose from 13 core training programs, including
several associate degree and diploma programs. The
college has two campuses in Houma.
A world-class research facilities located in the
parish is Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium
(LUMCON) which was formed under joint agreement
and a legislative act to provide coastal research
facilities, marine-related instruction, and public
service for citizens of Louisiana. It has allowed
for the construction of a coastal learning and research
center similar to those found in other coastal states.
